How the Alberta Security Guard Exam Works
Learn how the Security Guard Final Government Exam works in Alberta to pass it and get your security guard licence!

Government Exam for ABST & AIT
Once you have completed your Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) or Alberta Investigators Training (AIT) course, the next step is to take your government final exam. Once you pass, you can apply for your Alberta Security Services licence. The security guard licensing exam and private investigator licensing exam are administered by an official government proctor on specific dates each month and are offered online or in-person at the Tip of Spear facility in Edmonton.

Did you take the Tip of Spear ABST course IN-PERSON?

Attend all 4 days of the course?
If YES, then you can write the exam.
Tip of Spear will automatically register you to take the exam on the Friday of the course. You do not need to register for the exam.
Exam is free (included in the cost of the course).
Did you take the Tip of Spear ABST or AIT course ONLINE?
Did you
-
100% complete the online course, AND
-
Receive at least 80% on the module quizzes?
If YES, then you can register for the exam.
Please register yourself for an exam date. You have the choice to write the exam online or in-person at our facility in Edmonton. The cut-off for registration is 48 hours before the exam.
Exam is $50-60+GST. As of April 1, 2024 all Online exams will be $60+GST

If YES, then you can register for the exam.
Please register yourself for an exam date AND email us a copy of your training certificate to info@tipofspear.ca within 24 hours of your registration.
You can choose Options A or B below. You have the choice to write the exam online or in-person at our facility in Edmonton.
In-Person Exam is $50+GST. As of April 1, 2024 the Online exam fee will increase to $60+GST. If you register for the in-person exam, choose the "ABST/AIT: Write/Rewrite" option when you register on one of the dates below.

In-Person Exam
Option A:
Take the exam at our facility in Edmonton.
$50+GST if you:

Took your course through Tip of Spear or a different provider (Proof of training with different provider is required)

Are writing it for the first time, or re-writing it
FREE if:

If you are a corporate client and were advised by your employer/sponsor to register for the free exam.

You took the in-person training with Tip of Spear. You do NOT need to register as you are automatically registered.
NOTE: Late entries are not permitted, so arrive at least 20 minutes early
Online Exam
Option B:
Take the exam online, from your own home.
The requirements to use this service are to have a stable internet connection, computer/laptop with a microphone, and camera. (You cannot do the exam on a cell phone or tablet) Note: you will be joining a Team Meeting in addition to the exam website, which will be video/sound recorded, be 15 minutes early as no late entries are permitted.
$60+GST if you:

Took your course through Tip of Spear or a different provider (Proof of training with different provider is required)

As of April 1, 2024 the Online exam fee will increase to $60+GST.
Online Exam
Option C:
Take the ABST exam online, from your own home, if you are in a rush and need to take your exam right away. (Not available for AIT students)
The requirements to use this service are to have a stable internet connection, computer/laptop with a microphone, and camera. (You cannot do the exam on a cell phone or tablet) Note: On exam day, please launch the application 30 minutes in advance of your exam time as no late entries are permitted, and their proctors will help you get started!

Online Exams
Tip of Spear has an exciting new partnership to provide online exams to Tip of Spear students which will allow you to write your exam as soon as possible!
Currently this is ONLY open to students who trained with Tip of Spear. If you trained with another ABST/AIT accredited course providers, please see our other methods for online examinations, or request other options from your training provider.
$60.00 + GST
To be eligible to write your exam in this way, you must have your Tip of Spear training completed 100%. You can click the link below to have your eligibility checked and request to register for one of these exams. Once we confirm your course completion, we will email you a link and instructions on how to proceed to book your exam on a day you choose. You will register and pay the fee directly through our online exam provider.

If you took ABST training through Tip of Spear, and would like to take your exam sooner than the dates listed, request to take your online exam below. With this option, you can take your exam as quick as two days away!

Next Step: Apply for your Security Services Licence
Once you have written your exam, you will be emailed your grade from Tip of Spear within a week. Alberta Justice will also email you directly within 3-10 days with your official training certificate (download and save this certificate). Once you receive this, you can apply for your security services licence.
