How the Alberta Security Guard Exam Works

Government Exam for ABST & AIT
Once you have completed your Alberta Basic Security Training (ABST) or Alberta Investigators Training (AIT) course, the next step is to take your government final exam. Once you pass, you can apply for your Alberta Security Services licence. The security guard licensing exam and private investigator licensing exam are administered by an official government proctor on specific dates each month and are offered online or in-person at the Tip of Spear facility in Edmonton.
How to take your Alberta Security Guard Exam:
Requirements to Register for the Security Guard Exam

Did you take the Tip of Spear ABST course IN-PERSON?
Did you

Attend all 4 days of the course?
If YES, then you can write the exam.
Tip of Spear will automatically register you to take the exam on the Friday of the course. You do not need to register for the exam.​

Exam is free (included in the cost of the course).

Did you take the Tip of Spear ABST or AIT course ONLINE?
Did you
-
100% complete the online course, AND
-
Receive at least 80% on the module quizzes?

If YES, then you can register for the exam.
Please register yourself for an exam date. You have the choice to write the exam online or in-person at our facility in Edmonton. The cut-off for registration is 48 hours before the exam.

Exam is $50+GST.

from a different training company?

Complete and pass your ABST or AIT course through a different training company?
If YES, then you can register for the exam.
Please register yourself for an exam date AND email us a copy of your certificate to info@tipofspear.ca. You have the choice to write the exam online or in-person at our facility in Edmonton. The cut-off for registration and sending your certificate is 72 hours before the exam.
Exam is $50+GST. If you register for the in-person exam, choose the "RE-WRITE ABST exam / Referral" option when you register on one of the dates below.

In-Person Exam
Take the exam at our facility in Edmonton.

**You must have your course fully completed before registering for your exam, or you may be removed from that exam date.

Took your course through Tip of Spear or a different provider (Proof of training with different provider is required)

Are writing it for the first time, or re-writing it

FREE if:

You purchased your course through Tip of Spear before Jan 1, 2022.

If you are a corporate client and were advised by your employer/sponsor to register for the free exam.

NOTE: Late entries are not permitted, so arrive at least 20 minutes early

Online Exam
Take the exam online, from your own home.
The requirements to use this service are to have a stable internet connection, computer/laptop with a microphone, and camera. (You cannot do the exam on a cell phone) Note: you will be joining a Team Meeting in addition to the exam website, which will be video/sound recorded, be 15 minutes early as no late entries are permitted.

Next Step: Apply for your Security Services Licence
Once you have written your exam, you will be emailed your grade from Tip of Spear within a week. Alberta Justice will also email you directly within 3-10 days with your official training certificate (download and save this certificate). Once you receive this, you can apply for your security services licence.
